Four 4 TB drives yield 12 TB usable. Reads are quick thanks to striping. Writes are the catch: every write also updates parity, which costs extra operations on the array (the classic RAID 5 write penalty). A battery-backed hardware controller softens this with safe write caching, but it never fully disappears.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bigger catch is what happens after a failure:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rebuild times.<\/strong> Rebuilding a large drive from parity means reading every surviving drive end to end. On multi-terabyte disks that takes many hours to days, while the array runs slower and works harder than it ever does in normal life.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Second-failure risk.<\/strong> If a second drive dies during that rebuild, or a surviving drive hits an unrecoverable read error (URE), the array is lost. The stress of the rebuild itself is exactly the kind of load that exposes a weak drive.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why RAID 5 makes the most sense on smaller drives and read-heavy data, with real backups behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_RAID_10\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is RAID 10?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAID 10 groups four or more drives into mirrored pairs (RAID 1) and stripes data across the pairs (RAID 0). With four drives, reads can be served by all four spindles and writes by two pairs in parallel: roughly 4x read and 2x write compared to a single drive, with no parity penalty on writes. That is why database-backed websites and busy production servers consistently do better on RAID 10 than RAID 5.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resilience is the quieter advantage. A 4-drive RAID 10 survives two failures, as long as they land in different mirrored pairs; an 8-drive RAID 10 can in theory survive four. RAID 5 loses everything on any second failure, no matter how many drives the array has. The one asymmetry worth knowing: if both drives of the same mirrored pair die, RAID 10 is gone too. Luck has a say; the odds are just much better than RAID 5&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"RAID_5_vs_RAID_10_The_Key_Differences\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAID 5 vs RAID 10: The Key Differences<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deepest difference is how each one recovers. RAID 10 rebuilds by copying the surviving mirror partner onto the replacement drive: one read stream, one write stream, done. RAID of any kind is never a substitute for real backups. Deletion, corruption, ransomware, and software bugs are written to every drive in the array just as faithfully as good data. A proper backup is a copy stored somewhere else entirely; RAID&#8217;s job is keeping the server running while a failed drive gets replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_does_RAID_5_make_sense\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When does RAID 5 make sense?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When capacity per dollar matters more than write speed, and the data is read far more than it is written: media libraries, archives, file servers on modest drive sizes. Keep the drives small enough that a rebuild finishes in hours, not days, and keep backups current.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_which_is_better_RAID_5_or_RAID_10\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So which is better, RAID 5 or RAID 10?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For anything that writes constantly or cannot afford a risky rebuild (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maple-hosting.com\/solutions\/app-database-servers\">databases<\/a>, stores, SaaS, busy websites), RAID 10 is the better choice and worth the capacity cost. Choose RAID 5 when the workload is read-heavy and storage efficiency is the priority.
