What is an unmetered dedicated server? Why should you consider unmetered dedicated hosting? Dedicated server hosting brings many advantages over shared hosting options, and for many businesses, unlimited, unmetered bandwidth really does save money and provides peace of mind in the long run.
What is an unmetered server?
An unmetered dedicated server lets you move as much data as you want each month — no data caps, no per-gigabyte fees. You pay for the speed of your port, not the volume you push through it.

How to choose an unmetered server?
Port speed is only half the story — a fast port on a weak network still crawls. Choose a host with real network capacity, premium carriers, and a port sized to your traffic (video and media need far more than text).

Who Needs Unmetered Bandwidth?
If your workload moves serious amounts of data — or you simply can't afford to be surprised by an overage bill — unmetered hosting removes the ceiling and lets you focus entirely on your product.
Video Streaming
Deliver 4K or HD streams to thousands of concurrent viewers without throttling or unexpected bandwidth charges.
High-Traffic Websites
When viral spikes or seasonal surges hit, unmetered bandwidth means your visitors never experience slowdowns because of a monthly data cap.
Game Servers
High-traffic game servers need burst-capable, consistent throughput. Unmetered dedicated hosting keeps your players connected.
The Real Value of True-Unmetered Bandwidth
Metered hosting quietly punishes your best days — a launch, a viral moment, or a seasonal surge can turn into a painful overage bill. True-Unmetered removes that ceiling: flat-rate pricing, no per-gigabyte meter, and the freedom to grow without watching a counter.
No Metered Overage Bills
Metered hosting charges you for every gigabyte over your cap — one busy month, one nasty surprise. True-Unmetered never bills by the gigabyte: you pay a flat, predictable rate for your plan, and the sheer volume of data you move never changes it.
Built-In Burst Headroom
Billing is based on your 95th-percentile usage, and your physical port is set higher than your plan — so short spikes and live events ride the extra headroom for free. You only move up a tier when your sustained traffic genuinely grows.
Transparent, Not “Unlimited”
“Unlimited” bandwidth usually hides throttling, fair-use clauses, or quiet deprioritization. True-Unmetered is the opposite: a clearly defined plan on a real dedicated port, with no hidden brakes on your traffic.
By default we don’t cap your port, so a busy day never takes your server offline. If your sustained (95th-percentile) usage outgrows your plan, you move up to the next port tier — a clear, predictable step, never a surprise per-gigabyte bill. Prefer zero chance of ever needing to upgrade? Just let us know and we’ll cap your port to your plan.
Why Network Quality Matters Most for Unmetered Servers
An unmetered port is only worth what the network behind it can actually deliver. A “10 Gbps unmetered” line on a congested, oversubscribed, or single-carrier network will never sustain 10 Gbps to your real users — which is exactly why the cheapest unmetered offer is so often the slowest.
Port speed is a promise. Throughput is the proof.
Two hosts can advertise the same 10 Gbps unmetered port and deliver completely different real-world performance. What separates them is everything sitting behind that port: how much total capacity the network has, how directly it reaches the rest of the internet, and how intelligently it reroutes your traffic when a path gets congested.
When a provider sells far more port capacity than its upstream can actually carry — oversubscription — your “unmetered” server slows to a crawl the moment the network gets busy, usually at the exact peak hours your business depends on.
What actually determines unmetered performance
- Real capacity & headroom — enough backbone to carry every port at once
- A premium transit + peering blend — multiple Tier-1 carriers and direct peering, not one cheap upstream
- Intelligent routing — automatic rerouting around congestion and packet loss
- Low latency & near-zero packet loss — the real drivers of usable throughput
- Proximity to a major exchange — sitting on AMS-IX, not several hops from it
Comparing unmetered hosts? Look past the port number.
Before you commit, ask any provider these questions. Vague answers usually mean an oversubscribed network dressed up with a big port number:
- Which Tier-1 transit carriers do you use?
- Who do you peer with, and are you on a major exchange?
- What is your total network capacity?
- How do you handle congestion and packet loss?
- Do you use an intelligent routing engine?
- Is the port truly dedicated, or shared and oversubscribed?
On the Maple network, the answer to every one of those questions is built in: 5.5 Tbps of aggregate capacity, a blend of Tier-1 carriers (Cogent, Deutsche Telekom, and NTT) plus direct peering with networks like Google, Microsoft Azure, and Meta, 100GE uplinks, and Noction intelligent routing that steers around congestion and packet loss. That is the difference between an unmetered port that merely looks fast and one that genuinely is.

Unmetered Bandwidth FAQ
Each server has a True-Unmetered bandwidth plan. On a True-Unmetered 5 Gbps plan, your usage for the calendar month must stay at or below 5 Gbps (per 95th percentile billing).
Here's how it's measured: your server's traffic is sampled every five minutes throughout the month. At the end of the month, the top 5% of those readings are discarded. The highest remaining sample is your 95th percentile. As long as that number is within your plan, there are no extra charges and nothing else to pay.
In practice, this means that short-lived traffic spikes, live events, and large transfers won't cost you extra as long as your sustained usage stays within plan.
Your plan limit — say 5 Gbps on a True-Unmetered 5 Gbps plan — is the 95th percentile ceiling your monthly usage must stay beneath. Your physical dedicated port is often set higher, for example - 10 Gbps.
If your usage exceeds your plan's threshold, you'll need to upgrade your bandwidth plan. Upgrading is straightforward and takes effect immediately. Bandwidth plan changes are not prorated
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. Changes take effect immediately — no waiting period and no disruption to your server. Bandwidth plan changes are not prorated.
